Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming also rely on the Colorado River. In 2023, faced with long-term drought, California agreed with Arizona and Nevada to jointly conserve 3 million acre-feet of the river’s water. This agreement, while important for conserving water, is seen by some as further threatening the area’s agriculture and water supply.
San Diego also relies on water from the Northern California Bay Delta. The water from the Colorado River and bay delta system supplies around 80% of the San Diego area water. The remaining 20% comes from local sources, including saltwater desalination.
